How to make a rustic wood sign (step by step guide)
1. Surf the internet
Let’s start with the easiest and fun step. Surfing the internet! Before choosing the font and the writing. Find some inspirational or welcoming quotes off the internet or whatever you want to write on your wooden sign.
You will come across hundreds and thousands of designs, writing, and fonts, and the best part is you can choose your favorite one, or even if you don’t find a favorite one, you can make one yourself!
Once you are done with choosing the font and style, make sure that you always cross-check so that you don’t choose something too big or too small, or too rushed.
When you have settled that, save the image to drive and get a print made of it in the right size.
Don’t worry; the printing will cost you very little.

2. Shop for wood
The next thing you would want to do is, again, super easy and super affordable. Shop for plywood!
Shopping for only plain plywood will help you get the kind of rustic wood that you have wanted to have. If compared to ready-made rustic signs, you don’t get a lot of say in the kind of wood you want.
By shopping for plywood, you will have a chance to buy something rare and unique.
So, once you are done buying the wood of your desire, have it cut to the shape and size you want.
Once again ere we get a benefit over ready-made wood signs. Now you can have the size of the sign that fits perfectly in your house rather than just settling for a standard size.
(P.s you can get your wood cut from any home decor store easily)

3. Give it a personal touch
What’s fun in making a wooden sign at home without giving it some personal touches here and there?
You can either stain the wood a little, sprinkle some paint on it, give it some strokes of your favorite color, or simply just spray paint it lightly. You can go through Google for new ideas and creativity.
After you are done decorating your wooden sign, set it apart, and let it dry completely so that the design and texture don’t get disturbed.
4. Shop for lath
Shopping for a wooden lath won’t be hard since there isn’t much variety of it available, neither are they are over the top expensive or hard to find.
Although, one thing you need to be sure of when you are shopping for a wood lath is that you don’t want to compromise on its quality.
As I said before, wooden laths are already pretty affordable, so if you go looking for an even cheaper lath, it won’t be durable at all.

5. Paint the lath
Once you are done with buying the lath, make sure you get it cut to your desired size and length. Again you can get it cut easily from any home décor store or professional.
Before you give it for cuttings, make sure to cross check the lengths so that it sits perfectly with the print-out.
After that, give the lath a little glow up; you can again paint or stain your lath to give it a little old and wooden texture.
Although painting the lath isn’t a bad idea but I myself would prefer staining it more as it gives a more permanent and real effect on your lath.
6. Trace the Printout
Remember what I said earlier about the first step is the easiest and fun one? Well, I was clearly lying; this is the easiest and fun step! Before you go on and trace the printout, make sure the wooden sign is completely dry so that you wouldn’t ruin it.
If the staining or the paint is taking too long to dry, you can use a hairdryer to dry it more quickly.
All that you have to do is place the graphite paper smoothly under the printout that you earlier got and neatly trace the over the lines with a pen. How easy, right!
Well, the next step is the same, just much easier. You just need to Get the paint marker and trace over the lines once again as you did earlier and fill in the spaces neatly where needed or where you want/like to.

7. Connect the wood lath to the plywood
Last but not least, if you are already tired by now from all the other previous steps, this step will seem like big fatigue to you!
On the other hand, if this step seems hard or if you feel like it’s dangerous, you can simply get this done from a wood professional or from any home deco store. It will only take a few minutes, and you will be all good to go.
Yet if you want to do this yourself, you will need the staple gun or just a regular old school hammer along with some nails.
All you will have to do is use a staple gun to staple the lath to the plywood on the backside of the signboard.
Trust me; the staple gun is much wood gun and less time taking too before you decide to hand it in or place it on its spot.
You have to make sure that you have stapled enough staples on each side of the lath strip so that you can prevent any kind of mishaps or damage that may happen in the future.
8. DÉCOR IT
Guess I lied to you again about the most fun step! It looks like, after all, this is the most fun step! After you are all done with designing and creating this lovely wooden sign.
The last thing that it needs is a little decoration beside it! Once again, if you cant think of some fun yet mesmerizing ideas, go surf some pages and décor’s, find your favorites ones and try to duplicate them as much as you can.
Or you can just place some flowers or lights around your new rustic wooden signs and make the whole place warm yet fresh, comfy yet modern and just perfect for any kind of holiday or gatherings! Good luck!
